Not only are hospital closings bad for medical access for the local population, it also means a significant portion of the local population will lose good jobs.
These are but the latest examples of a financially failed U.S. medical delivery system. While our cutting-edge technology and pharmacology might be excellent, it is all but useless to the average consumer with dwindling and costly insurance who cannot afford adequate sick care, much less crucial wellness care.
President and Congresses have tried to reform it but not much of significance happened beyond Obamacare and even that was inadequate to the task.
It is time for this natin to embrace Medicare for all and overhaul that system.
Going to take a push from the average person to make this happen. But I agree and costs need to be controlled with quality care not just order every test under the sun. But im all for it.
Medicare is an outdated 80/20 insurance where, if you can afford it, people pay for it “supplemental insurance” to cover that 20%. Universal healthcare ought to be the goal, and what the ACA could/should have been. That would cover everything, including dental care, vision and hearing. The Dems have tried everything since President Obama, but the GOP keep holding us back. If we could ever get a solid majority, we could have nice things.
That is an old, tired and fully inaccurate representation of most. We have long lines and wait times. Some countries are better, some are worse than us.
Sure, if you have a cold or need stitches you’re fine in Canada. But this: While Canada had only 432 total MRI units as of 2022–2023, the US maintains approximately 13,000 to 15,000 machines nationwide, resulting in much higher accessibility and shorter wait times in the US.
Long COVID didn’t just steal my health — it carved out deep wells of grief and loss for the life I once had.Yet in the quiet aftermath, I’ve also found fragile threads of hope. In my new piece, I sit with that tension and ask why our healthcare system must do better: moving beyond symptom management to truly support healing and wholeness for every person left behind. This is my honest reflection — not medical advice. If these words echo your own experience, I’d be grateful to hear your thoughts.[https://standingforjesus.substack.com/p/living-with-long-covid-a-personal?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android&r=2l6lsx]#LongCovid #LongCOVIDAwareness
I asked AI if the cuts could impact baby Chance, the one year old who has never left NICU. His mother was kept alive artificially, despite no brain activity, because she was 9 weeks pregnant with Chance in a state that prohibited abortion after 6 weeks. Chance was born by emergency c-section and weighed 1 pound 13 ounces at birth. Given the invasive measures needed to keep hin alive, are his cortisol levels being documented and interpreted by experts in trauma? Is baby Chance suffering? How would we know?
Here’s AI’s response: Yes, if Baby Chance remains in the NICU, his treatment could be impacted by health insurance cuts, particularly if he relies on Medicaid. Proposed Medicaid cuts could limit access to specialized care, reduce provider availability, and impact hospital resources, creating significant financial risks for families and potential disruptions in care.
Medicaid cuts could reduce hospital services and provider availability, impacting specialized NICU care.Changes to Medicaid could lead to coverage losses, placing financial burdens on families.Even if not directly cut, families might face higher out-of-pocket costs, increasing financial strain. Hospitals might experience challenges in providing optimal care due to reduced funding, potentially affecting the quality of services.
Are you sure about OSF Danville closing? I am from Champaign and serve on a community board for OSF Urbana - they have gone to mainly psychiatric in/out-patient for a variety of reasons (not tied to ACA cuts) but I had not heard that the Danville office was closing. Also, as a conservative, I am interested in your columns but I always sense you really hate us!
I assure you if we do not properly adjudicate this man, the world will never trust us again. every world leader will just assume we will allow a criminal to run the country like Putin and Netanyahu. He has fully decimated every ally relationship. We must bring justice or we will never be able to have allies ever again. 80% of independents, 85 % of Dems and 17% of republicans agree. Or implement the 25th amendment and get him the mental health care he desperately needs. He has committed multiple felonies, but I am merciful and if institutionalizing him stops his truly insane behavior, that is fine too. Read about how every world leader is public on not trusting the US at all and may never again because of his corruption, abuse and ending NATO.
I just think Americans are tired of the constant lawfare - on both sides… it would be nice to have lawmakers - on both sides - focus on passing laws that will help all Americans. I also admire politicians like Fetterman who are willing to think for themselves. But it’s hard to do without alienating the base… anyway, this is all to say that I and I think most Americans are tired of the bickering and lack of collaboration and compromise in the senate.
RESPECTFULLY, it is not lawfare when an American president has committed and been convicted for felonies, is outwardly, deeply corrupt, and has fully ruined our reputation and ability to have allies. And, then there are the coming war crimes. Literally saying that it is law fare is like saying cancer is cold and it will go away.
Then let the courts decide it. I do think some of what you are saying are opinions. Let the lawyers duke out the facts in court. A lot of people voted for him and like what he is doing. Let the voters decide in the next elections. If candidates run on going after Trump and that’s what they want, they will win. And that’s what elections are for. I am more interested in issues that everyday Americans are struggling with and want to hear candidates talk about that - not just how much they loathe Trump. It gets old.
Politicians do not need to run on “going after trump” thats what Trump did. The criminal justice system will take care of him. We do need to elect representatives & senators that will ENSURE this never is able to happen again-passing laws for accountability and consequences when politicians break laws and also bringing back the programs that trump has destroyed!
They are on the “extreme risk “ list.OSF apparently is pursuing many avenues to fund its challenges, but the reporting from several indicate they are prioritizing behavioral health only. I actually don’t hate anyone. I do believe we should be fair to all and be good neighbors to each other. When government is abusive or makes cuts without analysis capriciously, I do call it out. These cuts will affect us negatively for decades. I am actually for trimming spending where needed, but making cuts without analysis capriciously with no study was irresponsible. We need to make cuts in military and other areas to at are bloated, such political campaign spending.
I am fully in agreement regarding health care. I recently had to purchase an individual policy (for $1,500 a month) after my husbands Cobra ended and he went on Medicare. I am 62, so this will continue until I turn 65. Hubby pays $800 a month for his share of Medicare (IRMA penalty) but better than $1,500. It is sad that rural hospitals are closing. My daughter works in healthcare (PA) in NC and sees a lot of lower income patients. The program helps them get to their appointments and they do a lot of follow up (mostly Medicaid patients). Anyway, you make some really good points in your article… just not sure focusing on impeaching Trump again would really do anything. Yes, focus on healthcare being affordable and available for all, but if you are sick of Trump - when he’s gone, why not just move on and do the good stuff?
Because he needs to go to prison and so does his entire complicit cabinet and most of the republicans in Congress. How in the hell do you think we got here??
Accountability for EVERYONE. If I break the law you are damn sure people will come after me! These people have committed TREASON!! Due Process and Justice! Full stop
Why would anyone support a man who has repeatedly broken the law and ignored the constitution. Why support someone who cares more about building his ballroom than the American people not being able to afford healthcare or food. When Obama tried to give us universal healthcare everyone on the right screamed socialism and republicans wouldn’t pass it so it’s annoying when I hear conservatives complain about healthcare and then keep voting for republicans who refuse to give them Medicare for all.
You are making some assumptions based on me being a conservative. Not all conservatives think alike. I am Trump neutral… meaning he wasn’t my first choice but I don’t have TDS either. I believe the voters will make their choices known and the pendulum will continue to swing. My hope is that both parties have better candidates in the 2028 election… a girl can dream… but I’m not opposed to considering a moderate democrat… if that could ever happen.
Of course we would give him a fair trial. No question . Impeaching is bring the charges, the trial is adjudication and conviction if he is found guilty. This is due process, which this president does not believe in, but Americans do.

Absolutely

I just retired last year after 43 years in healthcare. I go on Medicare this November.
We MUST adopt some type of universal healthcare and dump all these insurance companies that play with our lives for a PROFIT!
For-profit healthcare should be made illegal.
Agree!

Look at the long wait in other countries for various procedures—that’s worse

From all the local news reports, West Suburban and Weiss Memorial closings sound more like gross
mismanagment. How can you have a screwed up billing system and not do anything about it?
plenty of room for both.
