What Would $70 Million Buy If It Was Not Spent On Chicago Primary Elections? Actually Helping People.
I’m truly exhausted from watching the bloodsport. I’ve taken off time from all of my projects and donated my time to eight campaigns over the last 10 months. I’m truly spent from the bloody political warfare and the psy-ops silliness.
Similarly, having been a candidate and a member of Congress, I am more convinced than ever before, spending billions of dollars on US political campaigns is worsening our health, our morale, our ethics and our standing in the world.
I often think about what $70 million could do to actually help folks. The expenditure is absurd.
As a concrete example, here in Illinois, as of a week ago, Super PACs, AIPAC and candidate campaigns have spent well past $60 million and will likely exceed $70 million dollars on four open congressional seats and one open senate seat. Important to note, these estimates have not been fully refined and we won’t know the exact number until a few weeks from now. The primary election is Tuesday March 17th.
