Why Some Democrats Would Rather Eat Glass Than Say "Democratic Socialism." It Really Is Silly.

The first time I heard the term “Democratic Socialism” was when Bernie Sanders was running for president in 2015.

I actually did not react either way to it. It simply was a platform name that stressed affordability for all. Like many terms in the American language, when two words are used together, it means something different when they are used apart.

So this is the part where some folks might get cranky - brace yourselves.

Let’s talk about the word that makes older and/or establishment Democrats clutch their pearls, spill their decaf coffee, and immediately start muttering about “electability.” The word that, when whispered at a Democratic fundraiser, causes senior party members to faint dramatically like Victorian women who’ve spotted an ankle. That word, dear readers, is socialism — or more precisely, Democratic Socialism — and apparently it is the most terrifying combination of syllables since someone first said “New Coke.”
