I Hate This

Really, I do

Confession: One of the major reasons I will never run for office again is the daily need to fundraise.

Every candidate and member of congress is literally required to do call time (dialing for dollars) 5-7 days a week for at least 3 hours per day and then usually 2-3 fundraising events per month. And then of course, there are the weekly emails begging you for small donations. It is truly awful and I hate it.

Honestly, I could never go back to that lifestyle again. I could do all the other parts, but not that part.

And while I usually fundraise for the mutual aid groups that I volunteer for, I really don’t like fundraising for even the noblest of causes, unless I feel incredibly strongly about them.

Among the many reasons why I write this column, is to use the subscriber fees to donate to free clinics, mutual aid and healthcare organizations who provide free or scale services. Another reason is to donate to a handful of tremendous legislators.

So, this is the part I hate because I still have PTSD from my congressional days. I shared earlier this year, I would only ask three times a year for paid subscriptions and this is one of those times.

You may ask, why? The short answer is it is not for me, but it is to cover some of my costs to bring vetted facts, my experiences, my learnings inside and outside of congress and more, which includes:

• a handful of part-time interns

• research

• logistics with experts and interviews

• donations to highly vetted mutual aid organizations
